One of my FAVORITE DIY projects is detergent for the dishwashing machine.
We live in the country with very, very hard water. I have tried every brand of dishwashing detergent. Even the expensive and very toxic ones. Nothing worked.
I first tried this recipe to save money, but was HAPPILY SURPRISED to see it do the BEST job of anything else! Since I have particularly bad water I upped the amount of citric acid to a full cup, but if you have a water softener or city water you could consider dropping it down to as low as 1/4 cup if that works for you.
DIY DISHWASHER DETERGENT RECIPE
- 1 cup borax
- 1 cup washing soda or baking soda
- 1/c cup citric acid (lemi shine is basically citric acid and much cheaper than buying straight citric acid in the canning isle)
- 30 drops citrus oils of your choice (my favorite is half lemon/half orange, but any will work)
Mix the ingredients very well. Use a glass bowl (since citric oils will eat away plastics). When you drop in the oils they will bind with the powders and form clumps. Mix thoroughly to insure it is all incorporated with no clumps. If needed, you can use a sifter to make this easier. I store in a regular glass mason jar and keep in the kitchen cupboard. I fill the detergent section in my washing machine (about 2 Tablespoons) per load.
I wish I would have taken before and after pictures of my drinking glasses, because it worked SO WELL!
