We just went to a wedding where they read Romans 12 and it has been a scripture that has meant a lot to me lately. The crucifix at the wedding church was also great and moved me to share these verses with you all.
Romans 12:1-2a “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
The crucifix on the altar showed Christ hanging on the cross. Many churches have beautiful plain crosses, which is nice, but this one really hit home with me. Christ is God’s Son, He could have come and ruled over us all and lived in power and glory. He chose instead to give His earthly body as a living sacrifice to His Heavenly Father.
He felt pain, hunger, and exhaustion just as we do. But that wasn’t it. Christ offered His body to God’s plan, even to death on a cross. He endured insults, whipping, stabbing, and being hung on the tree. This is the greatest bodily sacrifice anyone can ever offer.
If Christ, King of all, can be obedient to such harsh treatment to His body, why is it we cannot keep our bodies as living sacrifices in much less extreme ways.
After the wedding ceremony I continued to think of all of this. Do I really offer my body as a living sacrifice to God’s Will? If He called me to international missions, youth missions, etc. could my body even keep up? God may not have called me to such strenuous work right now, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be ready for anything at any time.
Christ gave up His earthly life, and I can’t even get in a 15 minute exercise to keep my body in good condition? I only have this body because He gave it to me, and has blessed me with the health that I do have. I need to live grateful for my physical health, and use it to keep this body fit and ready for anything He can put into our future.
He came so that we could have life to the fullest, so let’s live it to the fullest!
Join me in a new attitude towards our fitness. No longer seeing exercise as a chore, but an act of service. Not something on the chore list, but something that could allow God to give us great works to do for His kingdom that we wouldn’t be able to do with weaker bodies.
How could 15 minutes a day change not only your body, but also your emotions, and your relationship with the Father? I have listed some fun Christian songs to workout to. Combine that physical fitness with worship!
